Skinned Orb

Skinned Orb

Summary:
I'm not sure why I created this tutorial. All I know is that I thought the skinned orb looked cool. In this Photoshop tutorial, we will learn how to design a skinned 3D orb for whatever purpose in your graphic projects.

Step-By-Step Instructions:
1. Open a New Document in Photoshop. Set width/height to 300x300 px.
2. Create a new layer. Name in "Orb 1".
3. Select the Eliptical Marquee tool. Holding the Shift key, draw a perfectly circle selection.
4. Select the Gradient tool. Set the gradient to "Radial Gradient". Gradient should be from white to black.
5. Click in the top right corner and drag to the bottom right corner of the circle selection to create your orb.
6. Goto Image > Adjustments > Color Balance. Move the Green slider under Midtones all the way to the right.
7. Click OK and you should have a green orb.

8. Goto Layer > Duplicate Layer... When the pop-up appears, name it "Orb 2", then click OK.
9. Goto Image > Adjustments > Desaturate.
10. Goto Image > Adjustments > Color Balance. Move the Red slider under Midtones all the way to the right.
11. Click OK and you should have a red orb (the green orb is still there, but underneath on the Orb 1 layer).

12. With "Orb 2" layer still active, click Ctrl+T to enter Free Transform mode. Use the shape handles to shrink the orb just a tiny bit smaller, so that you see the green orb peaking out from underneath. Try to move and position the red orb centered over the green orb.

13. From the layers palette, move "Orb 2" below "Orb 1" so it is underneath. The green orb should now be the only visible orb as it is covering the small red orb below.
14. Select the Eliptical Marquee tool.
15. Make sure that "Orb 1" is the active layer, then begin creating circle selections on the green orb.

16. Click the Delete key to remove those circle selection portions of the green orb.
17. Click Ctrl+D to deselect the circle selections.

18. Right click the "Orb 1" layer (green orb layer). Select "Blending Options" from the pop-up list.
19. Set the properties for "Drop Shadow" to the following:

20. Set the properties for "Bevel and Emboss" to the following:

21. Click OK to accept changes to Blending Options. You should have your Skinned Orb.

22. You can change colors for the green and red orbs by selecting their layers, going to Image > Adjustments > Hue/Saturation, then adjusting the "Hue" slider.
